Being a mother of two, I know having a baby is both a wonderful and worrisome experience. But for pregnant moms during the COVID-19 pandemic, I cant imagine yet another thing to worry about – getting COVID and the risk to your unborn child. My guest, Neonatologist, Dr. Christopher Golden explains what expectant moms need to know about COVID-19 in pregnancy and concerns for newborn care. He says, “There have been very few reports of babies acquiring the infection directly from mom in utero. The more recent reports have suggested that the infection happens after delivery. Which is why there have been very strict guidelines developed for the management and evaluation of babies after delivery.”
This episode covers:
- How the SARS-CoV-2 virus is transmitted to newborns
- Symptoms of COVID-19 infection in newborns
- How and when newborns should be tested
- Current protocols to prevent and control the spread of the virus in the hospital
- If mom and baby can be together
- If mom can breastfeed
- When mom and baby can discontinue quarantine/isolation
*This episode was taped in December of 2020 . The status of COVID-19 changes so please follow current recommendations in regards to COVID-19 in pregnancy and newborn care.
Thanks, William Christopher Golden, MD!
