Drugs, opioids, abuse and addiction have been around for a long time. But for this generation, the face of the opioid epidemic has shifted, according to Addictionologist, Dr. Shonali Saha, “from middle-aged men to suburban, young adults-male and female who are addicted to heroin.”
This episode covers:
-What is substance use disorder and addiction?
-Which teens are more at risk?
-Preventive strategies to help teens say NO to drugs
-Short and long-term effects of drug use
-Signs of drug use and addiction
-Steps to take when you suspect your child has a problem with drugs
-Treatment options
Dr. Saha also says that the adolescent period is normal for risk taking and experimentation. So don’t think that your child won’t be tempted to try drugs. Be proactive and empower your teen to say, “Nah, I’m good.” This episode is a great start! (More resources below)
